Firefogg: Transcoding videos to open web standards with Mozilla Firefox
Source: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/columns/firefogg_transcoding_videos_...
GNU/Linux has never been short of audio and video players, but they live in a world of multiple codecs, chief culprit amongst them being MP3, AAC, WMA and (Adobe) Flash. I say “culprits” because they are not free and open codecs. They are encumbered by patents; most websites with embedded audio/video use them and most of the people who view them are also using other patented software: Windows. GNU/Linux is a good alternative and all distros come bundled with free and open multimedia alternatives too: Ogg. You would not be surprised that these players can handle Ogg but what if I told you that Mozilla’s Firefox browser could not only handle this codec but could be used also to transcode videos to that format? Interested? Read on.

Open messaging for the Open Web: Installing and configuring Mozilla Raindrop on Ubuntu 9.10
Source: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/columns/open_messaging_open_web_inst...
By the time you read this Karmic Koala will have been released to a waiting world, but I couldn’t wait. A felicitous combination of a desire to do a distribution upgrade to the release candidate and a Twitter arriving on my laptop giving me a link to Raindrop kept me busy for the day. I was intrigued by Raindrop and having used other Mozilla lab experimental software I was determined to see what all the hype was about. If you like the idea of combining a tool for aggregating Twitter, e-mail, RSS and other social Web 2.0 stuff with free and open standards then read on.
Problem with playing flash videos in Firefox on Ubuntu
Question:
I recently bought a PC from Zazz with Ubuntu installed on it.
For the most part it is going very well.
Got most of the applications I need up and running, but I'm having some trouble with flash videos in Firefox.
This is my first time using Linux as my primary OS, so although I do know some stuff, I'm far from an expert.
When Windows 7 ships without IE8 will it be good news for free software browsers?
Source: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/columns/when_windows_7_ships_without...
A few weeks ago, Microsoft announced that Windows 7 would not ship with Internet Explorer 8 within the European Union. This is to comply with EU demands following the anti-trust case some time back. On the immediate face of this seem like good news for users of other browsers — but is it?

How to use a password manager on firefox
Source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1155912
Too many people use the same or similar passwords on multiple sites. This tutorial gets you using the firefox extension Passwordmaker for unique & strong passwords. It's a tricky & complex app so suggestions/improvements are quite welcome.
Will protect you from
Hacked sites revealing all your passwords
Keyloggers, sort of. They'll get your master password but may not know how to use it.
Won't protect you from
password reset attacks that use your city of birth etc
