Hey guys

I've got a ThinkPad W700 and I've been using Karmic on it since its release. I finally got around to really tweaking the TrackPoint's settings.

ThinkWiki describes how to configure TrackPoint using a variety of methods. However the article is a little out of date, incomplete, and confusing.

How to get Wireless LAN (Broadcom) on Acer Aspire 4720Z working with Ubuntu 9.10

After about 2 or 3 years away from Linux, I busted it back out when my free trial of Windows 7 expired. The first problem I ran into, as many do, is getting the wireless LAN to work. I didn't find a thread relating to this exact laptop, and had to do a bit of research of my own to find the answer, so I figured I'd post a quick howto for anyone else running into this problem.

1) Introduction

Here's a longish guide to unlock, root and run Debian on your Nexus One.

It's based on various guides and forum posts around (see embedded links), but with more details, with some missing pieces and corrected mistakes, all compiled into a (hopefully) newb-friendly step by step guide.

How to Install HP Deskjet F4440 All-In-One in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

This all-in-one is supposed to work out of the box in Ubuntu 9.10 but the scanner didn't work when I plugged it in. In fact, scanimage -L didn't even list it.

Karmic comes with hplip 3.9.8 which should support the f4440. I tried installing the newest version of hplip from http://hplipopensource.com (3.9.12 at the time of writing this) but the script kept aborting due to an error when it was running the make command. So here is what I did to get the all-in-one working.

This how-to is based on a German wiki, the man page of randr and some own experiments. It addresses some projector detection and configuration problems in Karmic:

I just upgraded a first generation Atom netbook from Jaunty to Karmic. It has the ordinary Intel GMA950 integrated graphics,
lspci | -grep VGA gave me:

At the Gran Canaria Open Desktop Summit in July 2009, the Open-PC project was announced. The statement said the project aimed to “cooperatively design a Free Software based computer by and for the community”. Further this PC would use only hardware for which there are free software drivers available. This would be a PC with the minimal compromise required for running a free desktop. In January 2010 the project announced the launch of its first product.

How to mount and format floppy disks in Ubuntu 9.10 Jaunty

I've had a lot of trouble with this one, especially regarding blank "IBM Formatted" disks. The auto-mount utility for floppy disks in gnome had trouble with clean disks. Getting into "Windows" disks isn't remarkably easy either. Many people will say floppies are extinct, and I do agree for the most part, but anyone who has built a Windows system with SATA hard drives prior to Vista's debut will understand why you may still need an occasional FDD.
