I was looking for the how to for some time and I found it here. The problem is that the how-to is quite outdated (it is for 7.04) and it no longer work. So I make one and post here. The server is slow so please be patient.

For those who have no patient, here is a brief:
You need to install MPlayer and use its preference dialog to select appropriate codec setting.<

Set up Sound Juicer to rip from CD as VBR mp3s

Seeing as there's a lot of topics flying around the forum, I'll make a howto based on my own research. This will tell you how to enable mp3 encoding (i.e. enabling you to rip CDs as .mp3 files), and then overcome the cursed CBR 128kbps that is imposed on you.

If you open Sound Juicer (called Audio CD Extractor in [i]Accessories>Sound & Video{/i]) and select Edit>Preferences the output format box will have a few options, by default none of them MP3. If you hit edit profiles, however, you will see an mp3 option, yet if you select it, you find it cannot be used to encode your mp3s yet (by default).

Question:

I'm currently testing Hardy on my laptop which has Gutsy installed in a separate partition.

I was editing the Hardy fstab to copy the partition data from my Gutsy fstab and unfortunately included my /home partition - when I next booted Hardy it used the Gutsy /home partition which, amongst other things, fired up rhythmbox.

When I went back to Gutsy I got the message...

"Could not load the music database<

Question:

For some reason i'm unable to play .wav files in any of my available media players (songbird, rhythmbox). I have ubuntu-restricted-extras installed, as well as ffmpeg and w32codecs. My sound settings are all set to use ALSA, and can play any mp3 or m4a without any problems. Any help would be appreciated. Oh, i'm using 8.10 too.

V-sync problem with video in Ubuntu

Question:

During video playback I experience horizontal tearing (similar to what happens when you don't have v-sync enabled in the video options in games), meaning that the video image often splits a little bit when there is movement. On my secondary hard drive with Vista there's no such issue.

What can I do to fix this?

Skype audio in Ubuntu delay (lag)

Question:

Hello all,
Recently upgraded to Ibex (8.10) with no significant problems.
I have, however, run into an issue with Skype (2.0.0.72). For some--as yet unidentified reason--I'm getting significant audio delays of up to 15 seconds. Interestingly, receiving (incoming) audio is not delayed, only transmitting (outgoing) audio. In all cases, video appears to fine (<@2 second lag).

Concerts

If trawling through the official websites of your favourite artists in the Songbird library to view their tour itinerary is a bit of a slog, Songbird has an addon to for that too. Once you download and install Concerts, it will appear in the side panel of the library tab. Clicking on it will bring up configuration options for country and artist:

Is it a bird or a browser? Both.

You can of course decide not to use the wizard: you can always configure it later if you wish. Songbird will then launch itself and you either free to start exploring your music or import (more) media to Songbird. If you have a iPod and elected to install the base extensions with the wizard, your iPod it will be recognised and handled. Incidentally, Songbird also supports MTP (Windows only) which meant that you should be able to import music from supported devices, though not in the integrated manner of Amarok. Once you have populated Songbird with music, it’s time to experiment and have some serious fun extending it to see what it can do.
