The battle in the virtualization market enters a new phase: Sun Microsystems released new versions of its virtualization software Sun xVM. And a few days ago Red Hat announced its takeover of Qumranet, makers of the virtualizer KVM. Meanwhile Microsoft and Novell are teaming up to counter with their own Microsoft Hyper-V and Suse Linux Enterprise Server offerings.

Lenovo and Novell next week are set to announce joint work on Lenovo’s new Think servers. However, the Linux faithful are distracted this week by reports that Lenovo has stopped selling SUSE Linux on certain PCs. Now, both Lenovo and Novell are weighing in with responses.

The controversy started when DesktopLinux.com noticed that online buyers could no longer purchase Lenovo ThinkPads with Novell’s SUSE Linux preloaded.

Novell is losing money in the desktop Linux market, but those desktop deals are driving big wins in the server arena, according to Senior VP and Chief Marketing Officer John Dragoon. A case in point: Novell’s desktop Linux relationship with Lenovo — the big PC maker — will extend to servers this September, confirms Dragoon.

It’s another small step for consumer Linux, and another giant win for Novell SUSE Linux. The VAR Guy was strolling through his local BJs Wholesale Club over the holiday weekend, when he spotted a Hewlett-Packard 2133 Mini-Note PC (pictured) with Novell SUSE Linux preloaded. Sweet … but not perfect. Here’s why.

First, the good news: BJs is a massive retailer that generated $2.65 billion in sales during its most recent quarter. It’s a powerful company that influences consumer spending, especially when it comes to impulse electronics purchases.

The next time somebody tells you Ubuntu Linux is just for the desktop, check out Egressive Limited, a solutions provider in New Zealand that’s gaining traction in the Ubuntu Server market. In fact, all of Egressive’s support customers now have Ubuntu servers at the center of their networks, and Egressive uses Ubuntu exclusively as the company’s hosting system. Is this part of a bigger “hidden” trend? The VAR Guy sure seems to think so. Here’s why.

Microsoft is sending another $100 million toward Novell as part of an ongoing Windows-SUSE Linux relationship. Here are five things Novell should do with that dough.

5. Pay Top Dollar for a Channel Chief: Novell is seeking a new channel chief to replace Pat Bernard and head up the company’s partner program. The VAR Guy hopes Novell raids a top channel organization (Cisco Systems and Microsoft itself come to mind) to find that new hire.

Microsoft and Novell expand their interoperability partnership with Microsoft buying up to $100 million in SUSE Linux certificates. The partnership helps enable SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Windows Server to work together in the datacenter. Moreover, the companies will continue to work collaboratively on virtualization, systems management, directory and identity federation, document format compatibility, accessibility technology, and the Moonlight multimedia framework.

When IBM got cozy with Canonical, Novell and Red Hat to announce the Microsoft-Free PC initiative, at least one closely related company missed the party: Sun Microsystems, the original advocate of OpenOffice. I’m starting to wonder if IBM’s Lotus Symphony efforts are starting to eclipse Sun’s own office suite efforts.

Open source fans know Sun launched the OpenOffice.org project in 2000 and continues to contribute significantly as a community member. IBM, meanwhile, is promoting its Lotus Symphony suite — based on OpenOffice code — as a key component of the Microsoft-Free PC initiative.
