In connection with the Windows viruses and impossibility to start regedit or Windows in whole, sometimes Windows users need to edit the registry from outside. I've found, so far, the only utility in Linux chntpw, which was originally designed to reset passwords, and then acquired the registry editing ability.

I have been wanting to write this article for a while. Years, in fact. I am determined to write it in the simplest possible format: no punch-line at the bottom, no building up to a grand conclusion, but simply stating something impressive, true, and simply wonderful: the hegemony that Internet Explorer once upon a time had is… over. Right now, other browsers are fighting amongst each other, and it’s all about how much of IE’s share they are getting. The war is over: Internet Explorer lost. Everybody else won.

The BBC, DRM and the demise (?) of get_iplayer. what the hell is going on?

It’s never nice to hear about the demise of a piece of simply brilliant software. when I discovered that get_iplayer was being pulled by its developer I was, to use a cliche, gutted. The potential loss of a piece of software that did just what it said on the tin is bad enough but it was impeccably free and open. What’s more, it was an example to the BBC about how things should be done. It was the work of one lone, unpaid developer, not the product of professional developers subsidised by the BBC licence. What happened exemplifies everything that is wrong with proprietary software.

We will be work with Ubuntu 9.10, which comes with grub2 (referred to here as just grub), the boot loader program we will be working with. Using its Live CD, use GParted to make your partition table. It is advisable that you use a ext3 format for all your linux partitions, at least for the ones that will primarily be using Ubuntu. When setting up a partition table, try to keep your OSs on the SATA hard drive as the ATA HDDs (HDD = hard drive) can be slower at reading, writing, and loading data. Feel free to put things anywhere you like, with the following constraints.

This is a small collection of mostly random "gotchas" I encountered when migrating other people to *buntu for various reasons. Most of these assume WUBI will not be used to run *buntu at full speed.

I do not take responsibility if your computer dies as a result of my ineptitude. But should it fry, please post! I'll correct tips.
